Welcome to the Medford Boat Club Sailing Program!
βItβs remarkable how quickly a good and favorable wind can sweep away the maddening frustrations of shore living.β

Sailing has been a part of life at the Medford Boat Club on the Mystic Lakes since the club opened in 1898 and the proud tradition continues! We offer sailing lessons for members of the club, youth ages 7 and up, as well as for our adult members. We create opportunities for racing in inter-club and intraclub regattas for both youth and adult sailors, as well as networking opportunities for sailors who are interested in racing in bigger boats in the Boston area and beyond.
Reach out to Kerry O’Brien for any questions about the sailing program at MBC: [email protected]
PFDs (aka “Life Jackets”) Required
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) must be worn at all times while on sailboats, paddleboats, kayaks, etc. This includes parents. PFDs must be worn by children UNDER THE AGE of 15 while on sail docks, fishing docks, work docks, etc. The Medford Boat Club does not provide PFDs. Each family is responsible for purchasing, maintaining and storing PFDs. PFDs must fit properly and securely. Please click here for more information. Email [email protected] with any questions about selecting and purchasing PFDs.
Use of Club Sailboats
Members wishing to use Club Boats must be registered in Sailing Lessons, must have the approval of the Sailing Director, and usage must not interfere with sailing lessons. Use of club boats when an instructor is not present at the club will be dealt with on a case by case basis, and requires approval of the Sailing Director.
Private Boat Ownership
Club boats are available for use during sailing lessons. Beyond the Beginner level, families are encouraged to consider purchasing a boat for personal use in lessons and regattas. This can be done on an individual family level or as a joint purchase. Consultation with Sail Staff and the Sail Committee can help a member family determine what kind of sailboat is the right choice to purchase. These varieties typically include: N-10 sailboat, Optimist sailboat, laser, snipe. There are many postings at the club for N-10s available for sale. See Sail Staff or email Kerry O’Brien for more information and assistance.
